Knowing automotive Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes codes and North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes are official automotive business classification categories. NAICS codes are recognized by the governments of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Finding the correct SIC or NAICS code is usually the first step in picking an automotive business-to-business mailing list. You’ll usually see B-to-B mailing lists defined by automotive SIC codes.
Sometimes you’ll see North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. These codes describe a wide variety of automotive businesses including auto repair and car dealerships.
Automotive SIC codes are an older classification system and very broad by their definition. Automotive SIC codes were replaced with automotive NAICS codes in the 1990s, which also get updated every five years or so.

Even with automotive SIC codes being outdated, a lot of B2B automotive mailing list data still relies on old SIC codes to identify businesses in the automotive aftermarket.
SIC codes aren’t completely obsolete. The SEC maintains a Standard Industrial Classification Code List for 2022 here. These are used for EDGAR filings.
NAICS codes are from two to six digits long, creating five levels of detail. The highest level is two digits and includes the largest number of businesses in a particular category; for example codes beginning with 44 or 45 represent retail businesses. NAICS is a hierarchical system that gets more precise and targeted as you add digits. For example “4413” represents Automotive Parts, Accessories, and Tire Stores within the retail category, while “441320” narrows it to Tire Dealers only.
Auto repair shops SIC code
Using automotive SIC codes for business-to-business lists is sometimes necessary. Today, automotive businesses are categorized by automotive NAICS codes (North American Industry Classification System) instead of the old-fashioned SIC codes. So, for example, the auto repair SIC code is 7538, but it is more likely you’ll find auto repair businesses under NAICS code 811111. The auto repair SIC code is technically outdated.
How did SIC codes start? What’s a NAICS code?
These automotive industry NAICS codes were created by the Federal government in 1997. They were then revised in 2007, 2012 and again in 2017 (and the latest update is valid through 2021). NAICS automotive classifications were intended as a replacement to the older automotive SIC Codes.
NAICS codes are more precise and more “granular” for identifying automotive businesses. Even today, SIC codes are more commonly used for automotive business data. Even when using new NAICS codes, it’s important to know that many automotive businesses aren’t accurately classified. Or, they may qualify to be classified by more than one NAICS code. We sometimes can get around this problem in email marketing by using a combination of business classification codes plus validated business keywords to help identify specific businesses.
